Nicolas Favresse was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1980. From a very young age, he felt drawn in by the alluring forces of nature and loved to play among them. During his childhood, he experienced his connection to nature through the sports, such as windsurfing, mountain biking, and skiing. A revelation came to him at the age of 15, when Nicolas took his first steps on rock.
From the first encounter climbing was like a drug for him, which he could no longer go without. His progress was rapid and impressive. After less than a year of climbing, Nicolas was already among the top Belgian rock climbers.
At 18 years of age, having already stood on the highest step of competition podiums several times, he went to the United States for a year as an exchange student. After six months away from rock, however, he decided to end the year early. Instead, he began a quest to explore the cliffs of this vast continent. After spending time at many of the West’s excellent crags, Nicolas returned to Europe with a new vision and a list of exploits that reflected his push to new limits.
Back in Belgium, he studied for a degree in marketing, which he finished in June 2003. Since then, he has dedicated all his time to climbing projects and is now climbing professionally year-round.
Earlier in his climbing career, Nico took part in competition circuits, from national to international levels. In his home country of Belgium, he is known as “The Champion”, with several consecutive national titles. In 1999, he had obtained an impressive 6th place at the Junior World Championship. And even as a newcomer to the World Cup in 2003-2004, he scored 9th place among the world’s most elite climbers.
But what he loves above all is to be at one with the elements of nature. It is in these conditions that he excels in his discipline. In 2004, he left a strong impression in Spain with a quick repeat of “Estado Critico”, which carries the magical grade of 9A. With this accomplishment, he became the first rock climber of the Benelux to have passed this barrier and reached a level attained by only a handful of people in the world.
On a climbing trip to Yosemite in 2004, Nicolas was introduced to other climbing traditions, traditional climbing and big walls. Here he discovered a deeper passion that has recently led him to climb and open big walls throughout the world in places such as Patagonia, Canada, Yosemite, etc…
We can count on him, he will continue pushing its limits!
